How to use text formatters
Text Formatters are powerful search-and-replace rules that allow you to automatically clean up or modify product data as it is imported. This is particularly useful for removing supplier names from titles, fixing common typos, or standardizing descriptions across your catalog.
Why use Text Formatters?
- Branding: Remove "Supplier X" from product titles to maintain a consistent look.
- Data Cleanup: Standardize abbreviations (e.g., replace "cm." with "centimeter").
- SEO: Clean up descriptions that contain messy HTML or irrelevant technical jargon.
- Global Changes: Apply a single rule to thousands of products at once.
Creating a Text Formatter Rule
- Navigate to Selection & Markup > Text Formatters.
- Click the Create Text Formatter button.
- Import Source: Select "All" or a specific supplier if the rule only applies to their data.
- Field: Choose which field to target:
- Name (Title)
- Model
- Brand
- Short Description
- Long Description
- Facets (Attributes)
- Search Text: Enter the text you want to find. This is case-insensitive.
- Replace Text: Enter what you want to replace it with. Leave this empty if you simply want to remove the text.
- Click Create Text Rule to save.
Tips for Effective Formatting
- Test First: Check a few products after creating a rule to ensure it's behaving as expected.
- Case Sensitivity: Since the search is case-insensitive, a rule for "HP" will also replace "hp" and "Hp".
- Empty Replace: Use an empty replace field to strip out unwanted words or characters (like "PROMO!").
